The Baltimore Ravens are looking for a new kick and punt returner. Baltimore’s previous return man, Michael Campanaro moved in free agency to Tennessee. Campanaro’s legacy is complicated in Baltimore. Before breaking out as the main return specialist, he was best known for his absenceĀ from the field. Injuries gave Campanaro a hard time since joining the Ravens in 2014, which stunted his growth as a player. Now that Campanaro has moved on from the Ravens, Baltimore must find a new return specialist. Two receivers are currently leading the competition for the returner position. They are Tim White and Janarion Grant.
Ravens fans will remember the effort Tim White gave in last year’s offseason and preseason. He was the star of the show and looked like a seasoned veteran on the field. He was set to make the roster until he injured his thumb. Whether or not he will perform to the same caliber as last year is uncertain, leaving room for Janarion Grant to make a move. Grant was a star at Rutgers, where he started as a wide receiver and return specialist. Grant was the engine that drove the Scarlet Knight’s offense. He was also one of the best return men in the country and was thought to be a future NFL draft pick. Unfortunately, like Michael Campanaro, injuries dealt a huge blow to Grant’s career. He missed many games over the past couple of years, which killed his draft stock.
Grant now has a chance to restart his career. Grant has reportedly impressed the coaches tremendously, and a real competition is brewing in Baltimore. The electric college returner could be the spark that lights Baltimore’s special teams in a way they have missed since losing Jacoby Jones. Grant will have to beat out Tim White for the spot, but both could make the final roster should the Ravens see value in at least one of them as a depth wide receiver. It will be interesting to watch this competition unfold in the preseason, which is only one month away.
