As if getting annihilated by the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 44-7 loss wasn’t bad enough, the Ravens managed to lose one of their key players for the foreseeable future. In yesterday’s debacle of a football game, Ravens defensive end Brent Urban left the game early with an injury. The severity of the injury was a mystery to the fans, all that was known was that he did not return to the game. Now, the Monday after the game, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced the injury news to the public. Brent Urban officially suffered a Lisfranc foot sprain and is likely to miss a considerable amount of time.
A Lisfranc foot sprain can have a variable recovery time. According to NFL Insider Ian Rappoport, Urban is expected to see a specialist shortly. While discussing Urban’s injury, Coach Harbaugh said that he would have surgery for the injury. If that is the case, Urban would probably need an extensive amount of time to recover. The loss of Urban is a major blow to the Ravens defense. Urban on the defensive line provides Baltimore was a powerful defender with explosive properties. Without Urban, the Ravens defense will be forced to adapt to life without him.
Although Urban’s injury is obviously bad for the Ravens, they are fortunate to have such depth along the defensive line. When making cuts to trim the roster to 53 players, the Ravens opted to keep all of their defensive linemen. Each lineman possesses the ability to contribute on any NFL team, and the Ravens did not want to let any of them go. Defensive lineman Bronson Kaufusi and Chris Wormley will now jockey for the role left vacant by Urban. Kaufusi is now in his second year in the NFL, and with the Ravens. The BYU defensive end frankly disappointed in his rookie year but looks to change things now in his second year. Chris Wormley was selected by the Ravens in the third round of the NFL Draft this year. The Michigan product is looking to be successful under his second Harbaugh coach.
