Yesterday, the process of proposing new rules and additions to the game of football that the NFL plays began. There were 15 total new rules and additions proposed. There are 3 rules that are very interesting that could be passed in 2017, and here they are:
1. Following the footsteps of Baltimore last season, when the team proposed to expand reviewable plays. This year, both the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks are proposing to be able to review penalties, and any other decision made by officials, excluding scores and turnovers. (Scores and turnovers are automatically reviewed).
2. Dan Snyder of the Washington Redskins proposed something that Ravens kicker Justin Tucker has been wanting for a long time, a reward for kicking the ball through the uprights on a kickoff. The proposed rule would start the opponent’s drive at the 20 yard line, instead of the 25, if the ball goes through the uprights on a kickoff. Last season, John Harbaugh proposed to a 1 point conversion for kicking the ball through the uprights. Harbaugh’s rule did not pass however.
3. The competition committee has proposed a rule change that would prohibit the Ravens twice used tactic of taking a safety at the end of the game, to run out the clock, by intentionally holding the other team, with no punishment. The Ravens did this tactic in Super Bowl XLVII, and last year against the Cincinnati Bengals. This would make the tactic illegal. Admitedly, it is pretty unfair.
