Matt Elam, a safety for the Ravens, was arrested for drug charges early this morning around 3:45 AM in Miami. He is being charged with possession of more than 20 grams of cannabis, possession of cannabis with the intent to sell or deliver, and possession of a controlled substance. Elam had been suspended in the NFL before for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, in 2015. Police say they caught Elam after pulling him over for reckless driving.
This will likely mark the end of Elam’s time with Baltimore. The Ravens drafted him in the first round in 2013, after the victory in Super Bowl XLVII, against the San Francisco 49ers. Elam has been a disappointment after being drafted in the first round, and the Ravens opted out of picking up his fifth year option, making him a free agent this coming March. It was doubtful the Ravens were going to resign him anyway, and this will all most certainly make the decision easier for the club.
